La Serena
Mountain Retreat Center
Nicoya, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
La Serena is a premier multi-discipline retreat center dedicated to holistic wellness. Our vision is to blend movement, nature, and community through specialized programs in tennis, pickleball, yoga, and sustainable living. We provide a sanctuary where guests reconnect with their vitality in the heart of the mountains, fostering a balanced lifestyle rooted in the tranquility and spirit of the tropics.
The Vision for La Serena
The Nicoya Peninsula is one of the world’s recognized Blue Zones — regions known for longevity, movement, connection to community, and a simpler, healthier way of living. That philosophy naturally aligns with the vision behind La Serena. From the beginning, the goal was to create a retreat experience rooted in wellness, movement, sustainability, and connection to the land itself. The disciplines at La Serena — tennis, pickleball, yoga, organic farming, and sustainable living — are all designed to reflect that lifestyle and create a more balanced and intentional experience for guests.
Nicoya also stood out because of its unique location within Costa Rica. Set in the mountains above the town of Nicoya, the property offers expansive views, cooler temperatures, and a peaceful natural setting, while still being centrally located to many of Costa Rica’s most sought-after destinations. From La Serena, guests can comfortably explore beaches, waterfalls, cloud forests, volcanoes, and surrounding towns — all within a reasonable distance. The location creates an ideal balance between retreat, adventure, accessibility, and infrastructure.
For Daniel Mainzer, the vision for La Serena grew naturally out of years spent in tennis, hospitality, retreat hosting, and a personal connection to the mountains and tropics of Costa Rica. Over time, the idea evolved into creating a multi-discipline retreat center designed around experiences that bring people together through movement, wellness, nature, and community.
La Serena is being built not simply as a destination, but as a place that reflects a different pace and rhythm of life — one inspired by the natural beauty and lifestyle of the Nicoya Peninsula.
Our location is strategically chosen to offer guests absolute privacy and immersion in nature. Perched above the vibrant town below, the retreat experience is defined by the sounds of the jungle and the sight of endless forest canopies. Whether it is through our specialized yoga flows in our open-air palapa or high-performance tennis retreats, every aspect of the guest journey is designed to foster a balanced lifestyle that mirrors the longevity found in the local Nicoya community.
Daniel Mainzer, the founder and visionary behind La Serena, brings decades of experience in high-end hospitality and professional sports coaching. His background in tennis and passion for ecological preservation have merged to create a retreat center that doesn't just host guests—it inspires them. Daniel's commitment to sustainable living ensures that La Serena operates with the highest respect for the land, preserving the very beauty that draws our guests to this tropical haven.
Design Concepts for La Serena
Designed Around Nature, Community & Simplicity
Contemporary tropical architecture inspired by the mountains and lifestyle of Costa Rica.
The Design Philosophy
The design of La Serena is centered around simplicity, natural materials, open-air living, and connection to the surrounding landscape. Throughout the property, the architecture will combine polished cement finishes with extensive teak wood detailing, creating a contemporary tropical aesthetic that feels both elevated and grounded in the natural environment of Costa Rica. Rather than separating guests from nature, the design intentionally embraces the climate, vegetation, natural light, and surrounding mountain views to create a retreat experience that feels immersive and connected to the land itself.
Contemporary Tropical Architecture
Structures throughout the property are designed using polished cement, teak wood, natural stone, and open-air architectural elements that reflect both durability and simplicity. The combination of cement and teak creates a clean contemporary aesthetic while maintaining warmth, texture, and connection to the tropical surroundings. Bathrooms, communal spaces, walkways, and guest accommodations are all designed to feel modern, functional, and integrated with the surrounding environment.
The Main House
The main house is designed as the central gathering space of La Serena — a place for dining, conversation, learning, relaxation, and community. The space will include large communal dining areas, open kitchen and buffet-style serving spaces, lounge and relaxation areas, flexible gathering spaces for meetings and retreat instruction, and operational support areas including laundry and staff facilities. The overall design emphasizes openness, comfort, functionality, and connection between guests throughout the retreat experience.
The Pool
The pool is designed as a central hub for relaxation and connection during the retreat. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains, it provides a gathering space where guests relax together, enjoy the warm Costa Rican sun throughout the day, and find a sense of community in a tranquil setting.
Guest Bungalows
The guest bungalows at La Serena are designed as restorative private spaces spread out across the property to ensure absolute privacy for every guest. Each comfortable bungalow is fully equipped with air conditioning and high-end bedding, providing a cool and quiet sanctuary. Featuring both indoor and outdoor sitting areas with a private patio, these spaces offer the perfect environment for guests to relax and unwind during the day. We provide a range of accommodation options to suit different needs, including bungalows for individuals or couples, as well as larger units perfectly suited for families or friends sharing their retreat journey.
Tennis & Pickleball Courts
La Serena will feature two hard court tennis courts designed for both tennis and pickleball play. Each court will be lined to accommodate a total of four pickleball courts, similar to the layout shown in the concept image. The courts will be lit for evening play under the lights and are planned to comfortably host between 8 and 12 players at a time. Hard courts were chosen for ease of cleaning and durability in the mountain climate, with resurfacing anticipated every 5 to 7 years in Costa Rica’s conditions.
The Yoga Rancho at La Serena is a dedicated yet multi-purpose open-air space designed for absolute immersion in the tropical mountain landscape. While it will primarily host yoga retreats and regular classes led by visiting yoga vendors—with options for personalized private lessons—it also serves as a flexible hub for a variety of specialty movement practices. Other disciplines including stretch and flex sessions for athletes, fitness and strength training classes, and mindful movement workshops will utilize the space, making it the heart of mindful activity and vitality at La Serena.

Organic Farming and Sustainable Living
At La Serena, organic farming is part of the retreat experience. Our on-site gardens supply fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs for a true farm-to-table dining experience, nourishing guests with food grown just steps away. This area also serves as a hands-on discipline: guests are invited to join us in the fields, learning our growing methods, helping plant or harvest seasonal crops, and connecting more deeply to the land that sustains them.
Open-Air Living & Outdoor Spaces
The outdoor spaces at La Serena are designed to blur the line between architecture and nature. An open-air yoga palapa will create an immersive setting for yoga and wellness retreats, while dedicated areas for organic farming and permaculture will support experiences connected to sustainability and farm-to-table living. Throughout the property, tropical landscaping, native vegetation, and natural gathering spaces are designed to create a relaxed and immersive retreat environment.
“Every aspect of La Serena is being intentionally designed to support a slower, more connected way of living — one rooted in movement, nature, community, and the unique atmosphere of the mountains of Costa Rica.”
Connected Through the Landscape
Set across more than five acres in the mountains above Nicoya, the property is intentionally designed to feel connected through nature. Walking paths lined with tropical landscaping will connect the various elements of the retreat, including guest bungalows, the communal main house, pool and gathering spaces, tennis and pickleball courts, a yoga palapa, and organic farming and permaculture areas. The overall layout encourages movement throughout the property while maintaining a peaceful and immersive atmosphere.
The Retreat Experience
Our all-inclusive retreats provide everything you need on-site, from mountain-view dining to sustainable living. Stay immersed in our private sanctuary or venture out only if you choose. Customize your stay by choosing various activities that match your personal interests, such as surf lessons, ATV and quad tours, zip lining, and other exciting excursions.
Experience
A Day at La Serena
A balance of movement, exploration, relaxation, and community.
Each retreat at La Serena is designed around a natural rhythm that reflects both the climate and lifestyle of Costa Rica. Mornings begin early in the cool mountain air, while afternoons and evenings are structured around relaxation, excursions, community, and connection to the surrounding environment.
Early Morning
6:30 AM – 7:30 AM
Fresh fruit, Costa Rican coffee, juice, and light breakfast items are available as guests begin their mornings overlooking the mountains of Nicoya. Guests prepare for the day’s featured discipline, whether it be tennis, pickleball, yoga, or organic farming and sustainable living experiences.
Morning Session
7:30 AM – 9:30 AM
Morning sessions are scheduled during the cooler hours of the day, allowing guests to fully enjoy instruction, movement, and activities before the midday heat arrives. Depending on the retreat focus, mornings may include tennis instruction and drills, pickleball clinics and match play, yoga and wellness sessions, or organic farming and permaculture experiences.
Breakfast & Recovery
9:30 AM – 10:30 AM
Guests return to the main house for a relaxed buffet-style breakfast featuring authentic Costa Rican cuisine, fresh fruit, gallo pinto, plantains, and other locally inspired foods. This portion of the day is intentionally unhurried, allowing guests time to relax, shower, and prepare for the afternoon.
Afternoon Excursions
11:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Afternoons are reserved for exploration, relaxation, or optional excursions throughout Costa Rica. Guests may choose to visit nearby beaches, explore waterfalls and mountain towns, travel to La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano, experience the cloud forests of Monteverde, or relax poolside on the property. Transportation is coordinated through local tourism partners or retreat staff depending on the excursion.
Evening Session
6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
As temperatures cool, guests return for lighter evening sessions connected to the retreat’s primary discipline. For tennis and pickleball retreats, evenings may focus more on match play, social competition, or relaxed group activities rather than structured instruction.
Community Dining
8:00 PM
Evenings conclude with shared meals, conversation, and time to connect with other guests in a relaxed communal setting. Meals are designed around fresh ingredients, Costa Rican flavors, and a farm-to-table philosophy that reflects the lifestyle of the region.
Quiet Evenings
9:30 PM
Guests are encouraged to slow down and enjoy the peaceful rhythm of the mountains — whether through conversation, reading, relaxing by the pool, or quiet time in their private bungalows. La Serena is intentionally designed to support both community and personal restoration.
Midweek Recovery Day
Wednesdays at La Serena are intentionally left open as a recovery and exploration day. No formal retreat programming is scheduled, giving guests the freedom to relax by the pool, explore Costa Rica independently, enjoy nearby towns and beaches, or rest and recharge on the property. This slower pace is an important part of the overall retreat experience and reflects the balance and lifestyle philosophy behind La Serena.
While La Serena offers a private, secluded mountain sanctuary for restorative quiet and focused movement, we understand that a truly successful stay involves exploring the vibrant landscape of Guanacaste. Whether it’s the adrenaline of zip lining, the sun-soaked shores of Playa Samara, Nosara, Guiones, and Pelada, or rugged ATV excursions through the jungle, your adventures are limited only by your imagination. La Serena simplifies your journey by providing dedicated transportation and staffing for all off-property excursions, allowing you to pick and choose your preferred experiences with ease.

Investment Opportunity
An opportunity to participate in the development and future growth of La Serena Mountain Retreat Center.
The Opportunity
La Serena Mountain Retreat Center is seeking aligned investors to participate in the development of a multi-discipline retreat center located in the mountains of the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The project is structured around a total capital raise of $1,000,000, representing 75% ownership participation in the business. The minimum investment is $50,000, with participation available in increments of $50,000.
Ownership Structure
Investments into La Serena will be made through a Minnesota-based company formed as La Serena Mountain Retreat Center LLC. This U.S.-based LLC will serve as the sole owner of a Costa Rican corporation (Sociedad Anónima or “S.A.”), which will hold ownership of the land and operate the retreat center within Costa Rica. This structure allows the business to legally own and operate property in Costa Rica while maintaining U.S.-based ownership and investor participation.
Revenue & Distribution Structure
Revenue generated through retreat operations will flow through the Costa Rica operating entity and back into the U.S.-based LLC. After required Costa Rican government withholdings and operating expenses, distributions may be paid to investors through the U.S. LLC based on ownership percentages. Investors are responsible for their own tax reporting and filings within the United States. Additional details regarding the legal and tax structure will be provided through formal investment documentation.
Investment Participation
The minimum investment in La Serena is $50,000, with additional participation available in increments of $50,000. Each $50,000 investment represents approximately 3.75% ownership participation in the project based on the current capital structure.
Owner Retreat Benefits
In addition to ownership participation, investors receive annual usage benefits connected to the retreat property itself. For every $50,000 invested, investors receive one private bungalow for one week during high season and one week during off-season, with annual recurring usage rights based on ownership level. High season is defined as November through mid-July.
These accommodations may be used personally, shared with family or friends, utilized during retreat programming, or released back to the business for guest bookings. If an owner chooses not to use their allotted time during a given year, La Serena may rent the bungalow to retreat guests, allowing the owner to participate in the associated revenue generated from that booking.
A Lifestyle-Based Investment
La Serena is designed not only as a retreat business, but as a long-term lifestyle and hospitality concept rooted in wellness, movement, sustainability, and the natural beauty of Costa Rica. The goal is to create a retreat environment that offers meaningful experiences for guests while building long-term value for ownership participants.
